Apple turns to Google to power AI upgrade for Siri
Improvements to a number of Apple services - including a more personalised version of its virtual assistant, Siri - are to be powered with AI provided by Google. The tech giants have announced a multi-year collaboration which will see the iPhone-maker base some of its key tech on Google's Gemini AI models. In a joint statement, the two firms said the partnership would unlock innovative new experiences for Apple users. However, experts say it demonstrates how Apple's cautious approach to building and rolling out its own AI tools has left it reliant on other companies. By outsourcing the foundational layer of its AI to Google, Apple is effectively admitting that its internal efforts couldn't compete with Google's Gemini in terms of capability and scale in the short term, IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said.

Apple to pay out nearly 100m over claims phones listened in on users' conversations... how to get a payout
Anyone who owned an Apple device over the last decade may be able to claim part of a 95 million class action lawsuit against the tech giant. According to the lawsuit, iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and MacBooks dating back to 2014 may have secretly recorded their users' private conversations after the devices unintentionally activated Apple's voice assistant Siri. A notice about the case, Lopez v. Apple, has advised anyone who believes Siri spied on their confidential or private calls between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024 to submit a claim for damages. Apple's iMacs, Apple TV streaming boxes, HomePod speakers, and iPod Touches are also included in the lawsuit. Although Apple has denied that their devices spied on users, the 3 trillion company reached a settlement in the case, agreeing to give users up to 20 per Siri device in their claim.

How to manage Siri Suggestions on your iPhone
If you've been keeping up with the recent discussion around how best to use Signal and how to keep journalists out of your private chats about national security matters, you'll know that White House officials have been blaming an iPhone feature called Siri Suggestions for adding unauthorized members to a private group chat. Siri Suggestions works on iPhones (and iPads and Macs) to give you contextually aware assistance when you need it. The feature might make suggestions about who to invite to events based on previous events, for example, or give you prompts for searches on your device, based on what you've searched for at certain times in the past. In the case of the White House Signal chat blunders, it appears Siri made a contact suggestion based on details included in an email--only the contact details in the email weren't those of the email sender but those of someone mentioned in the message, which is where the confusion arose. As with many modern day AI tools, Siri Suggestions lets you choose where to draw the line on how much assistance to get.

How to turn off Apple Intelligence on all your Apple devices
With the latest versions of its software--specifically iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3--Apple has now turned on Apple Intelligence by default. That means all of the associated AI tools will be ready and waiting to help you as soon as you've installed the updates and restarted your device. However, Apple isn't (yet) forcing you to use all of these features, and you can still turn off Apple Intelligence, if you'd like to. Note that if you've previously turned Apple Intelligence off on your device, the iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3 updates won't suddenly turn it back on--your previous choice will be respected. If you're new to Apple Intelligence and want to know what you're dealing with, it's a suite of AI features covering just about every app on your phone.

Stop talking to your phone: How to use Type to Siri
Among the changes ushered in with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 Sequoia is a new Type to Siri option. This means you can carry on a conversation with Apple's digital assistant without having to talk out loud, which is helpful when you're in a quiet library, busy subway car, or anywhere else you can't really use voice control. The ability to type to Siri has actually been available on Apple devices for several years now, but previously it was hidden away in the Accessibility settings and not all that easy to find. Now Apple has given it much more prominence in its operating systems, so typing is just as straightforward as talking. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday.
Tech expert reveals four ways to find your lost iPhone
Many iPhone users may be familiar with that heart-stopping feeling when you pat your pocket and the familiar outline of your phone isn't there. Usually, you're able to find it lying nearby, but a tech expert has revealed fail-proof ways to locate a lost iPhone if it's taking longer than usual to find it. Kurt Knutsson, also known as Kurt the Cyberguy, is the founder of The Cyberguy Report which warns viewers about possible cybersecurity scams and whether you could be a target. The Apple watch can be used to ping your iPhone if they're within 330 feet of each other He has now explained that the tools users already have access to like Siri and the Apple smartwatch are effective ways to locate your missing phone. Although iPhone users can use most Apple devices to locate their phones, there are three other options you may not have considered, according to Knutsson.
Apple's new AI update won't come to European devices until next year at the earliest due to privacy concerns, tech giant admits
It was the most highly anticipated feature to be unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year. But Apple now says Apple Intelligence and two other big updates won't be coming to devices in the European Union until next year at the latest. In a statement, the tech giant revealed that it would be delaying the EU rollout of its huge AI update due to privacy concerns stemming from the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple says it will also hold back iPhone Mirroring for Macs as well as SharePlay Screen Sharing enhancements due to'regulatory uncertainties'. MailOnline has contacted Apple for further information but it is not yet clear whether this will affect UK users.

AI is coming to your Apple devices. Will it be secure?
At its annual developers conference on Monday, Apple announced its long-awaited artificial intelligence system, Apple Intelligence, which will customize user experiences, automate tasks and – the CEO Tim Cook promised – will usher in a "new standard for privacy in AI". While Apple maintains its in-house AI is made with security in mind, its partnership with OpenAI has sparked plenty of criticism. OpenAI tool ChatGPT has long been the subject of privacy concerns. Launched in November 2022, it collected user data without explicit consent to train its models, and only began to allow users to opt out of such data collection in April 2023. Apple says the ChatGPT partnership will only be used with explicit consent for isolated tasks like email composition and other writing tools. But security professionals will be watching closely to see how this, and other concerns, will play out.
